As we come out of the pandemic and return to normal life, many of us will be
thinking about our careers and whether freelancing is right for us. Some of us will
have dipped a toe in this freelance world through building up a side hustle whilst
working full-time, and others will be ready to take the plunge and become a fully-
fledged freelancer. It’s worth noting that it takes time to build up a stable freelance
income, so it’s important to plan ahead and prepare well.
This is the age of the freelance economy, where flexible work is becoming
increasingly commonplace. It’s not just writers, designers or software engineers that
are going freelance – people from all backgrounds and industries are choosing to
pursue this career path. And the reasons for this are clear: flexibility and self-
determination are the main motivators.
For businesses, hiring freelancers can be very effective. Not only do they provide an
extra pair of hands to help with projects, but they can also bring in specialized skills
that you might not have within your team. And with the rise of the Internet, this
talent can be sourced from all over the globe.
What’s more, hiring a freelancer is often more cost-effective than employing a full-
time employee because freelancers are on a when-you-need basis, which means
that you only pay for the hours they work. The key is finding the right freelancers to
suit your needs. You can do this by taking the time to research and find freelancers
who have a track record of providing quality work for previous clients.
The Importance of Freelancing in a Post-Pandemic World It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic drove more and more people to freelance, with some estimates showing that over a third of the workforce now works in this manner.
The trend is likely to continue, with younger generations especially favouring this type of work model due to its flexibility and positive work- life balance. For businesses, this means that it’s now more important than ever to make sure they are attracting and retaining freelancers who are keen to work for them, by ensuring that they have a positive working culture and are offering flexible and attractive terms of employment.
There are also more and more freelancer-focused platforms popping up, as well as
traditional recruitment and consultancy firms reinventing themselves to support
project-based workers. This means that it’s getting more and more competitive to
find freelance work, so those who want to stay in the game should invest in
developing their online profiles and continue to maintain their professional networks.
It’s also essential that they keep their finances in check and have sufficient financial
buffers to cover slow periods, and they should always be on the lookout for
opportunities to diversify their income streams. It’s also important to prioritize self-
care and create a strong sense of work-life balance, as this will ensure that they
remain motivated during the ups and downs of their freelance journey.
